Regenerative Dairy Farm

We’ve had a few calls over the past couple of days from people worried after Arla’s announcement that they are selling milk from farms trialing methane suppressants.

People are right to be concerned, tampering with our food does not tend to have good results for the environment or our health. Cows producing methane is not the problem, our ecosystem is so perfectly designed that if therewasn’t a ecologically beneficial reason for ruminate animals to produce methane then they wouldn’t do so. Our soils capability to sequester is what we need to be focusing on and restoring.

Unfortunately these, apparently educated people can’t seem to think holistically and sadly believe that more man made inputs are the answer.

Rest assured, our cows have never or will ever be fed methane suppressants and we will continue to be a voice against such nonsense.

No, we will not be using Bovaer®

After the announcement by Arla Foods UK of a trial on 30 farms of Bovaer®, a feed additive to reduce methane in cattle, we have received a lot of enquiries.

As a biodynamic farm we are governed by very strict standards determined by Biodynamic Federation Demeter International (read the standards here https://demeter.net/certification/standard/ ) so feed additives such as this would not be permitted.

We believe that good milk comes from healthy cows eating a natural diet. In summer they are out on pasture, and in winter we feed our cows hay and silage made by our farmers. Along with a treat of biodynamic oats or fodder beet in the milking parlour, that’s it. So, you can continue to enjoy your daily pint of biodynamic raw milk, or even try it for the first time!

We have absolutely NO dealings with Bovaer. To be honest we hadn’t heard of it until a few days ago nor would we be interested in feeding it to our cattle!

Our cattle are fed on our home grown silage and bruised barley & wheat. We top up their diet with malted grains and draff when we can get it from the distillers. They are also fed ‘cake’ concentrate through the parlour which has no additives and is sustainably sourced.

Our milk, this year alone has won bronze medal in the dairy category at The Royal Highland Show, two stars in the Great Taste Awards, Silver in the Great British Food awards (judged by Michel Roux) and we won the top Excellence award in the dairy category for the Scottish Food and Drink awards - all of these for our milk! We would not want to compromise this winning formula!

We would like to reassure our customers that we do not use the synthetic feed additive Bovaer.

Our organic milk is certified by the Soil Association and the use of such additives is prohibited.

Our cows dine on a natural organic diet. Our fields are also free from chemical fertilisers, herbicides and fungicides - and have been for over 25 years.

What is Bovaer? It has been in the news this week, after one of the UK’s largest dairy companies began using it in an attempt to reduce the volume of methane produced by their cows.

We feel that our long term focus on soil health and regenerative farming is a far better and natural way to help reduce the effects of climate change.

Thank you for all your questions this week and for supporting our farm.

BOVEAR! A lot been spoken about this and I just wanted to clear up if we will be using this. For anyone that is unaware it’s a untested food additive that allegedly stops cows farting. Reduces emissions by about 28%. No tests for transmission through the food chain have been carried out so there is no way of knowing if products containing Bovear are safe. Our cows won’t be getting this. So rest assured our milk will still be the healthiest, freshest and most local product in the North East of Scotland! BUY LOCAL!

"BOVAER - what on earth it that, and are we using it? You might have heard about Bovaer—a feed additive designed to reduce methane emissions from cows.  It's also slightly more interesting than that too - as it's going to be made just 20 miles from our own farm in Dalry, Ayrshire for export across the world.

On the surface, it sounds like a game-changer for the planet, but here at Mossgiel it's not on the menu.

At Mossgiel, we don’t just treat the symptoms of the problem; we look at the whole picture. Yes, methane emissions are a challenge, but rather than relying on additives, we focus on creating a system that works with nature. Here's why:

All of the cows on all of the farms supplying Mossgiel live on and eat organic grass, just as nature intended.

They graze on lush, organic pastures and harvested grass,, free from chemical additives. We believe that  healthy cows raised in harmony with the land are part of the solution—not just for emissions but for the soil, biodiversity, and the quality of your milk.  On our own farm we feed seaweed too - which has shown to reduce methane naturally while boosting cow health through their immune system.

Regenerative, Organic farming is our fix.

Reducing methane isn’t just about what goes into the cow—it’s about what’s happening around her. By improving soil health, sequestering carbon, and promoting biodiversity, farmers are tackling emissions in a way that builds a better future for everyone.

Transparency is our promise.

Hey, anything that helps our climate issues is a positive to us - but humans have interrupted nature's flow before, and it's not worked out great.  Big companies are trying to fix our issues with additives and UPFs when often, the answer is in our soil and in our whole foods.

At Mossgiel, we’re committed to farming in a way that puts the planet, animals, and people first. Because in the end, we don’t just want to reduce emissions; we want to live in a world where farming is the solution, not the problem.

Bovaer may be the solution of the future in a number of cases, and a large dairy are leading the research with a few UK farmers; but it's not for us."

Raw organic milk from a small herd of healthy, happy, free-range cows!

We've had lots of messages about Bovaer today. A 'methane reducing' feed additive that Arla is planning to trial on farms in the UK.  Rest assured that we will NOT be using it on our farm!!

In fact, as organic producers, we wouldn't even be allowed to  use it. Under Soil Association organic standards, every ingredient must be deemed safe and nutritionally useful for the animal.

The push to use products like these (which may have negative side effects on the cows) speaks to a wider problem of blaming cows for climate change. This allows people to continue lifestyles reliant on fossil fuels and shift the blame to animals which have always been here.

Emissions from ruminants are short term and part of a natural cycle. Plus grazing ruminants themselves (when managed within natural holistic systems) are essential to building soil and sequestering carbon back into the ground. Cows are actually the solution, not the problem!!

Social media provides us with a fantastic way to connect with our customers and be transparent about what we do on the farm.

Our cows are predominantly grass-fed and spend as much time outdoors as possible, depending on the weather and grass growth. For cows close to calving, we bring them indoors to keep a closer eye on them.

When inside, their diet mainly consists of grass silage, along with maize and essential minerals. We work closely with a nutritionist to tailor a blend that meets the specific needs of our cows and youngstock, supporting their health and well-being year-round.

"We’ve had some people ask us about the Bovaer feed trials that have made headlines this week. Our cows are NOT being fed any strange new additives into their diet and the Bovaer trial is not something we are participating in. So there is no risk to any changes making their way into our milk. Our cows are fed a natural diet of food mostly grown by us on our farm. By switching to a summer and autumn block calving system, we rely even more on grass than we used to.  And it means we now use even less concentrate, and also less fuel to mix and feed the cows in our sheds.

We are really not a fan of the idea that we should change what comes out of an animal by feeding them chemically engineered additives. Like humans, animals should be fed natural diets, not chemical synthetics.

Methane produced by cows seems to be an easy target for diverting the blame for climate change from fossil fuel burning industries. Methane is dissolved into the atmosphere again after 10-12 years and is part of a natural cycle. So if the cattle numbers in the world stay constant, there’s no impact on global warming, because the methane is disappearing as fast as it is being created. Whereas the carbon created from burning fossil fuels as being added to the atmosphere as it has been extracted from its storage in the ground.

An additive may reduce the amount of methane coming out of a cow directly when burping or farting, but it’s not going to impact the amount seeping out of its droppings. So the net effect is surely going to be a negligible minimum, and the energy that goes into producing and transporting these additives will probably outweigh this negligible benefit. It seems to us to be an another gimmick and get another cost for farmers to endure without any additional financial contribution towards our produce from customers.

Global warming is caused by digging fossil fuels out of the ground in a way that is not a naturally occurring phenomenon. It is not caused by the natural biological processes of animals, which make use of carbon that is already in the environmental cycle.

Mawley Town Farm

mawleytownfarm.co.uk

"We’ve had a few enquiries this morning asking if we feed Bovaer to our cows. I wanted to confirm we don’t feed it to the Mawley herd. Arla is trialling the feed additive on dairy farms supplying Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi.  Bovaer claims to ‘*reduce enteric methane emissions from cows by 27% - depending on feed and cow management systems’ (*www.arlafoods.co.uk/news) ‘The active ingredient 3-Nitrooxypropanol blocks the last step of methanogenisis in the rumen, temporarily oxidising the Ni-cofactor in the enzyme methyl-coenzyme M reductase; this reduces the generation of methane in the rumen’

At Mawley we are already working hard to reduce our environmental impact and increase sustainability.  One of the ways we do this is through our renewable energy systems, including a biogas plant that provides the farm with electricity and hot water from capturing methane in cow slurry.

Verified by 3rd party audits, we’ve proven our commitment to sustainability, being placed in the top 10% of dairy farms with the lowest emissions output.

We always welcome questions and feedback so do get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to know.

"ISLE OF MAN CREAMERY CONFIRMS IT IS NOT TAKING PART IN TRIAL OF METHANE REDUCING FEED ADDITIVE, BOVAER

Our customers may have recently seen news articles about a new feed additive, Bovaer, which is said to reduce the methane emissions from dairy cows.

The news articles have come about as a result of Arla Foods (the manufacturer or brands such as Craveldale, B.o.B. and Farmers Milk) announcing a trial of the additive with major retailers Morrisons, Aldi and Tesco.

Some concerns have been raised by consumers over the safety of the additive which is made from silicon dioxide, propylene glycol and organic compound 3-nitrooxypropanol (known as 3-NOP). A report by the food standards Agency last year found that 3-NOP “should be considered corrosive to eyes, a skin irritant and potentially harmful by inhalation” to humans using it.

Isle of Man Creamery can confirm that its farmer producers are not taking part in any trial of Bovaer or any other methane reducing feed additive.

Managing Director, Findlay Macleod said: ‘We would like to reassure concerned customers that our farmer producers are not taking part in the trial of Bovaer.

‘We are proud that Isle of Man Creamery milk and dairy is independently certified grass fed, which guarantees that Manx cows are out to pasture a minimum of 200 days per year (current rolling 12 month average is 213 days), and a 70% grass based diet (which rises to a minimum of 80% April – September). This helps to produce naturally healthy milk and ensures high levels of animal welfare for our herds.

We have also worked hard to reduce our carbon emissions through packaging changes to bio-based milk cartons, reduced haulage to the Island, factory energy saving initiatives and, as a local product, extremely low food miles.

‘Customers can rest assured that Manx milk is fully traceable, and we have the highest standards of food quality and safety which is monitored constantly by our in-house laboratory and Technical team".

  • The cows investments, including travel, yachts and dwellings are responsible for just over 6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Oh no, sorry. That’s Bill Gates, one of the backers of Bovaer.

Luckily, our cows own no planes, or helicopters, they just spend all their time eating grass in the fields, or hiding from the weather in the shed, where they are fed more grass. No Bovaer. No chemicals. Just grass. Which is the way it’ll always be. Meaning when you buy our milk, you can know 100% what goes into it.

Reassurance alert!

We have had a number of enquiries about the use of Bovaer in our cows’ diet. Bovaer is a methane reducing feed additive being trialled by a handful of farms in the UK.  We know very little about Bovaer but are delighted to confirm that we do not use it and have no intention of using it in the future.

Crathorne milk is delicious and nutritious!

Bovaer Feed Additive

We have had a few questions related to the feed additive that is ‘meant’ to reduce methane emissions.

It is being trialed by a number of retailers including Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi.

We can confirm that we do not feed this additive to any of our cows.

Animal welfare is at the heart of our business and providing the best possible product to our customers.

Thank you

Bovaer - Bovaer - Bovaer……

Loads of folk have asked us today about BOVAER, it’s a feed additive being used by ARLA to ‘reduce methane produced by cows digesting their food’.

WE DON’T USE IT, & actually think that it’s trying to fix a climate impact that’s not actually an impact.

Below is the detail about the additive, it’s a shame it’s been added & folk weren’t told, I think that’s probably why so many people are upset.

BOVAER:  “User Safety: 3-NOP may be harmful if inhaled and can cause skin and eye irritation. It is not classified as a skin sensitizer. Due to incomplete data on its genotoxicity, inhalation exposure may represent an additional risk for users. In summary, Bovaer® is deemed safe for dairy cows, consumers, and the environment when used as directed. However, precautions are advised for individuals handling the additive to minimize inhalation and contact exposure.”

So, in summary, it is harmful in contact with skin, harmful if breathed in; is harmful if it gets in the eyes, and there is insufficient data on its genotoxicoty.

What is Genotoxicity?

Genotoxicity refers to the ability of a substance to damage the genetic material (DNA) within cells. This can lead to mutations, which may disrupt normal cellular functions and potentially result in serious health issues, such as cancer or heritable genetic disorders.

Key Aspects of Genotoxicity:

1.DNA Damage: A genotoxic substance may directly or indirectly harm DNA through:

•Mutations: Changes in the DNA sequence.

•Chromosomal Damage: Breaks or rearrangements in chromosomes.

•Replication Errors: Disruption in the process of DNA copying during cell division.

2.Testing for Genotoxicity:

•In vitro tests (in lab-controlled conditions using cells) assess DNA damage or mutation risks.

•In vivo tests (in live organisms) help evaluate effects on entire biological systems.

3.Relevance to Health:

•Substances with proven genotoxic effects may pose risks of cancer or developmental abnormalities.

•Regulatory agencies often require rigorous testing

There's been a lot of traffic on social media regarding the feeding of Bovaer 10 to dairy cows as a means of reducing methane production (Cow burps) and the side effects involved.

We don't feed Bovaer 10 to our cows and don't plan to either.  We are happy to rely on our organic, naturally regenerative, methods of production which include feeding seaweed. A natural product that boosts cow immune systems, by supplying beneficial minerals and at the same time reduces methane production.

There's no need to invent a manmade solution to this problem, when nature already has the answer!

We’ve had a few messages checking that we’re not feeding a product called Bovaer as part of a trial to reduce cows methane output. I don’t know too much about it but we definitely DON’T use it and have no plans to do so.  We do feed our cows a small amount of seaweed, which reduces methane production!

The Milk Well

https://www.facebook.com/themilkwell

We are aware of the media coverage regarding some big supermarkets / processers who have announced they are to trial Bovaer in the cows diet to reduce methane produced by the animal. We have had several enquiries relating to this, so feel we need to clarify our position.

To confirm this is definitely NOT something we feed our herd. We have confirmed with our animal feed supplier and will NOT feed this to our cows at any point. We are an independent dairy farm and ALL our milk is sold on our farm via the vending machines. We are NOT supplying any other dairy so are not controlled by anyone, making our own decisions

We feed our cows the best, natural diet we can provide for them to keep them healthy maintaining high welfare standards. We use minimal medicines and antibiotics also and follow strict rules in relation to them. This in turn makes for happy cows producing the highest quality and best tasting milk.

Know where you buy your food from.

Farm, Kidfield, Renald, Lane, Hoylandswaine, Barnsley, S36 7JX.

We have received numerous comments, messages and phone calls today enquiring whether we feed, or will be feeding, our cows the Bovaer Feed additive. We can categorically confirm that we do not feed additives of any form, and we will not ever be doing that. The Bovaer Feed additive is being trialled on a small number of farms within the cows diet to reduce methane emissions - not on our farm.

We personally think the additive is trying to fix a problem that isn’t that big to start with, there are many other causes of emissions in the world that could be significantly reduced without feeding extras to our cows!

Our cows diet is 85% homegrown on our farm, including grass, wheat, barley and maize. The rest is made up of cereals, which is a bit like your breakfast muesli, made up of vitamins and cereals to give them a healthy, balanced diet.

We would like to assure you that our milk is high quality, high welfare, low food miles and we are incredibly proud of our product.

As always, thank you for supporting your local dairy farm

Lots of our customers have been asking if we add Bovaer® to the cow’s feed- we DO NOT !! We will never give this additive to our Jersey cows.

Here at Wheelbirks we are confident that our milk is CLEAN.

It is unpasteurised, unhomogenised fresh Jersey milk- you simply won’t find any milk like it in this area.

Our small herd of 20 cows are only milked once a day, they keep their calves with them (until they are weaned) and live long and contented lives.

All of these facts are sadly unusual for dairy farms.  We are proud of our ethical farming practices and know that our customers are too.  All our milk is sold from Wheelbirks Parlour, our cafe/ ice cream parlour/ farm shop which is situated on our beautiful farm.  We also use the creamy milk to create delicious Jersey ice cream, which we make ourselves here on the farm.  There are no food miles here whatsoever.

It’s not something that we use on our farm. As an Organic farm we have set rules we have to follow with regard to what we feed our cows and how we manage our land.

As many of our customers are aware our cows graze on our organic fields for a large portion of the year and during winter they are fed on homegrown organic feed.  Our focus on sustainable organic farming.

We do not mix either Bovaer or 3- Nop into our cattle feed, and have no plans to do so.  There seems to be a lot of concern over this today in social media and I hope this reassures you.

Our cattle just eat fresh grass for most of the year, our own home grown silage and maize in the winter, with some cereal based cake and a small amount of vitamin and mineral supplements for a healthy balanced diet whilst they are being milked.  We want our cows to be as happy and healthy as possible, and produce our milk to the highest standards.

Milk (pasterised on farm), milkshakes (with syrups free from artificial colours), produce vending.

Proud to be dairy farming regeneratively.

I’ve had lots of questions today about what we feed our cows …. So, here’s what they eat:

Grass silage and maize silage - grown on the farm and preserved in the autumn so that we can feed it through the winter when they can’t graze because it’s too wet.

For a top up if energy they have some wheat and beans that are grown locally

We also feed a small amount of rapeseed meal - the bit that’s left over after they’ve made rapeseed oil.

Finally, a mineral that’s just like your mineral and vitamin tablets, because the girls work hard at the moment and I want them to be healthy and happy.

NOTHING ELSE! No methane inhibitors.

So, how do we reduce our carbon emissions? Well, by feeding them a high forage ration, by letting them graze for long seasons … by using the best, most responsibly grown feeds we can source, and by looking after our soil and the biodiversity on our farm. The bigger picture.

Phone me.  Message me. Ask questions. Support us if it matters to you that you can connect with where your food comes from and how it is farmed! Milk and cheese and milkshakes available in our vending machine and I’m here to talk all things farming if anyone wants to!

The good thing buying from farmers direct is we can tell you exactly how your milk is produced and share with you what we feed the girls! So here is the cows diet at the moment:-

Grass silage
Maize
Fodder Beet
Rolled Barley (2kg per cow per day)
Blend (1.5kg per cow per day) blend consists of wheat distillers, rapeseed extract and nova pro(uk produced alternative to Soya)
3kg of cake in the parlour

We work with a nutritionist to get a healthy balanced diet for the cows who visits the cows every 8 weeks to see how we are getting on with the ration.

Our cows fart and burp methane but this is all part of the natural cycle of life! As most of you know our milking girls spend most of their time eating grass and grazing (except winter) the grassland which sequesters carbon. They poop on the fields which in turn feeds the soil ecosystem and the grass they graze is converted into beautiful A2, gut friendly milk!

Or course there's much more to it than that but that's the gist of it!

There’s been some recent noise around a feed additive called Bovaer being trialed by certain businesses in the dairy sector. We want to reassure you that when you choose certified organic dairy, you’re choosing a farming system that’s legally protected and held to the highest standards.

In the UK, organic is the only system of farming and food production governed by a legal framework. This means everything we do - every method, every ingredient - is independently verified to ensure it aligns with organic principles.

Bovaer, the feed additive in question, is not approved for use in organic farming. So when you purchase certified organic dairy, you can rest assured that it comes from farms committed to natural, responsible practices - free from unapproved products or additives. Choosing organic is about more than taste; it’s about transparency, sustainability, and trust. Thank you for supporting a farming system that puts people, animals, and the planet first.
